May be Old News - But Wanted to Make Sure you saw this Fake Microsoft Security Alert

Fake Microsoft Security Alert - KB910721

Yesterday afternoon our spam traps caught a piece of malware disguised as a false security alert from Microsoft:

Update for Microsoft Outlook / Outlook Express (KB910721)

Brief Description
Microsoft has released an update for Microsoft Outlook / Outlook Express. This update is critical and provides you with the latest version of the Microsoft Outlook / Outlook Express and offers the highest levels of stability and security.

Instructions

* Install Update for Microsoft Outlook / Outlook Express (KB910721). To do this, follow these steps:
1. Run attached file officexp-KB910721-FullFile-ENU.exe
2. Restart Microsoft Outlook / Outlook Express

Quick Details

* File Name: officexp-KB910721-FullFile-ENU.exe
* Version: 1.4
* Date Published: Wed, 17 Jun 2009 17:03:27 +0300
* Language: English
* File Size: 81 KB

System Requirements

* Supported Operating Systems: Windows 2000; Windows 98; Windows ME; Windows NT; Windows Server 2003; Windows XP; Windows Vista

* This update applies to the following product: Microsoft Outlook / Outlook Express

It does look plausible, the spelling and grammar are surprisingly correct, for malware authors, but, as ever, one should always be cautious concerning e-mail attachments. Even those that purport to come from Microsoft and especially those that contain executables.

Sophos suggests that you go to the official Microsoft website to obtain your fixes since anyone who succumbed to this scam, far from enjoying ”the highest levels of stability and security“, will now be running a nasty little Trojan.

West Region Partner Representative

Did you know that Neil Pearlstein from PC Professional has signed on to be your Partner Area Lead for the up and coming Microsoft Fiscal Year. Neil is also a board member with the Nor-Cal IAMCP and a member of the US SBSC advisory board. With WPC fast approaching, and his direct connection with management level people at Redmond Neil’s goals are to work to effect change in the SBSC program with Microsoft based on feedback he is receiving from Partners in the Western US abroad. Neil is trying to help create a larger voice for the “little guys” on Microsoft’s Partner lists. He will work to provide insight into things that Microsoft is planning to do in the future with regards to SBSC and ask for input on these agendas before they are released to the community.

Neil is asking that you sign up for his blog at http://npearlstein.myblogsite.com/ so that together we can start posting information and insight that may generate constructive conversation to effect change. You can also always email Neil at npearlstein@pcprofessional.com with any questions or comments you may have with regards to information and his role as a “PAL”.

Reasons to Attend WPC 2009

Wondering Why to Attend WPC 2009 - here are a few - but mainly I say attend because every year that I've attended partners tell me they found it VERY worthwhile for a number of reasons (depending on why they went in the first place). With so many new products coming this year and so much to stay on top of, this is the ONE event that brings it all together.
If you are a West Region partner and you'll be attending, please let us know so that we can meet up. Glenn Osako, Benny Madrid, and Suzanne Lavine will be representing the West Region - we'd like to meet up with you in New Orleans!
  • Exclusive insights and outlines of innovation roadmaps for the upcoming year from Steve Ballmer, Kevin Turner, Allison Watson, Bill Veghte, Bob Muglia, Stephen Elop, Bob Kelly, Chris Capossela, Steven Guggenheimer, and other executives
  • In-depth information and demos of the new Microsoft product lineup, including Windows 7, Windows Server 2008, the 2010 Microsoft Office system, Windows Mobile 6.5, Microsoft Silverlight 3, Microsoft SQL Server 2008, and Azure Services Platform
  • Opportunities to leverage Microsoft’s relationships with industry analysts to get expert advice and compete information that you can use for your FY10 business planning initiatives
  • Accelerated sales plan development by scheduling meetings with Microsoft leaders and their teams to discuss your business needs and how Microsoft can help you drive revenue in the upcoming fiscal year
  • A first look at how the Microsoft Partner Program is changing to better serve your needs
PS there are discounts available for WPC and many hotels have special offers which will expire June 15th.

Microsoft Matchmaker Update - Participate Today!

Microsoft Matchmaker has been in now been in market for 1 month!  So far, we’ve had 815 Partners Profiled and 20 leads passed!  Is the Microsoft Matchmaker Cash Incentive Working?  80% of the leads passed have been ERP or CRM leads, which is a strong indicator that the cash incentive is driving behavior!  Of the 20 opportunities, submitted into the tool, 16 of them were Dynamics (9 landed in East Region, 4 in Central and 3 in West).  The Cash Incentive is only in market through June 15th, so we have approximately 1 month to maximize this opportunity!

What can you do to help drive more traction around this contest and get more ERP and CRM leads?

1.      Ensure your partners have profiled themselves to catch leads (partner ready email attached)

2.      Reach out to your platform counterparts to ask how they’re landing this incentive with partners:

a.      Make sure they have distributed the partner-ready email to all their partners (breadth and depth)

b.      Make sure they’re aware of the one pager and new! slide deck that are designed to help partners identify and qualify Dynamics opportunities (included in the partner-ready email)

c.      If there are Area calls or events you’d like to see Matchmaker presented at - let us know and we’ll try to arrange a demo and Q&A!

d.      Leverage your PTS’s where appropriate if you think they can help

3.      Encourage your partners to submit platform leads – this will encourage reciprocal behavior

Upcoming improvements to www.microsoftmatchmaker.com (will be live by May 29th):

·        MSPPID and Virtual IDs being refreshed to ensure all partners can create a profile

·        Partners will be able to edit their own organizational profiles (add additional selling geographies)

·        PAMs will no longer have to play a part in routing leads – one central alias will capture and distribute any lead that is not already assigned to a partner to ISS/tPAM teams, as appropriate (Lead Grid will be used for Dynamics leads)

·        Improved Reporting (by Area, Region and US)
